De Nike a On
Sports sponsorships have traditionally been understood as an exchange: the athlete brings visibility and the company pays to be associated with his image. But what if the relationship goes beyond that payment?
From Nike to On
After almost two decades tied to Nike, Kylian Mbappé has begun a new chapter with On, the Swiss sportswear and footwear brand. What is interesting about this move is not only that the striker has chosen to switch brands after so many years, but the economic terms behind the deal: on top of a cash payment, Mbappé will hold a stake in the company's equity.
This changes the lens through which we can look at a sports sponsorship. The relationship is no longer limited to what a brand pays to be associated with a footballer's image; it can also tie the economic interests of both sides to the growth of the business. And that is where the Mbappé–On case becomes especially interesting: what does it mean for an athlete to share in the value of a company, and what can a brand gain by bringing a star into its growth project?
Ten years, cash and shares
For Mbappé, the partnership is not limited to being paid for associating his image with On; it opens the possibility of sharing in the value the company creates over the long term. For the brand, it means bringing a global figure into its growth strategy through a relationship that goes beyond advertising exposure.
In this case, the length of the deal reinforces that long-term view, since the contract runs for an initial ten years. Although neither the total amount nor the percentage of equity Mbappé will receive has been made public, On has confirmed that the payment combines cash and shares, and it is known that Mbappé turned down a Nike offer of 20 million a year for 10 years. This is not, therefore, a deal whose value is limited to a fixed sum for promoting products: part of the relationship is tied to the company's future.
On's move into football
On is not signing a star just to gain visibility: it is using his arrival to enter a category dominated by brands with decades of experience and a strong presence in football. The Swiss company, best known for its running business and its expansion into tennis, is preparing the launch of its first football boots and a new product range for 2027. Mbappé's arrival therefore comes at a key moment for the development of this business line.
His role is not limited to lending his image to campaigns: Mbappé will also take part directly in developing and testing the footwear, bringing an elite player's experience to a brand that still has to prove it can compete in football. In addition, his appearance in On boots in EA SPORTS FC 27 means the brand is already being associated with football, reaching millions of fans through the video game even before its first boots launch. The brand has also brought in Thierry Henry as director of football, while footballer Sydney Schertenleib will take part in developing products for women's football. On is thus building a project that combines different sporting perspectives with its experience in innovation and design.
Beyond the share price
The news also moved the stock market. After the announcement, On Holding shares rose as much as 3.8%, while Nike and Adidas posted slight falls as the new partnership became known. However, On's gain eased during the session. The initial reaction reflects the interest the deal sparked, but on its own it does not measure the long-term economic impact it will have.
The question, then, is not how much the shares rose after the announcement, but whether On will be able to turn the attention generated by Mbappé into real business growth. To find out, we will have to look beyond the share price: sales of its football products, its ability to win new customers and the weight this category comes to have in the company's revenue.
For investors, the deal represents a bet on On's growth potential in football: Mbappé's arrival brings international recognition to a category in which the brand is still building its position, and the launch of new products opens an additional path to expand its business.
When sport, brand and capital meet
This formula connects two fields that are increasingly worth analysing together: the commercial value of sport and the business opportunities it can generate. For brands, it means exploring new ways of bringing talent into their strategy; for athletes, it opens the possibility of taking part not only in promoting a company but also in its growth.
Perhaps the most interesting evolution of sponsorship lies not only in how much an athlete's image is worth, but in everything that can be built from it. Because when sport, brand and capital meet, sponsorship can stop being just an investment in visibility and also become a shared bet on the future of a business.
