Porque nunca he visto a mamá rendirse.
Juan Colmenarejo Molina.
Today's article is nothing like what you may have read in recent years. On a date like today, I want to preserve the memory of the person who has driven me to do these things and be who I am today. In doing so, I will tell you how this idea came about and why I believe in it so much. It has taken me four years to find the courage to write this. Here you have a piece of me.
I grew up in an environment related to journalism. My father was a reference point in Spanish radio, with a track record at Onda Cero and the COPE network, heading "La Linterna". Furthermore, every weekend he would write an article for ABC or Vozpópuli. He was my role model and I wanted to dedicate myself to the same thing as him, although he always told me that I shouldn't. So much so that I took his advice and developed my passion for economics and finance. But that thought never left my head.
On February 22, 2022, I received the worst news of my life. It was a Tuesday and Juan Pablo Colmenarejo had gone to work normally at Onda Madrid, did his programme as always and then went to teach his journalism class at Universidad Villanueva. It was there that a cardiovascular accident took my father, who passed away on the night of this very day four years ago.
I will tell you that, since then, these have been four clearly very strange years. That 17-year-old boy who saw his father leave would, however, be proud of the 21-year-old person I am now. And I have no doubt that my father would be happy too. I went down the Economics path, I have seen the entire world because of it and I have overcome a thousand adversities from which I would never have imagined I would come out. A small change in my life was that there was no longer anyone to tell me not to dedicate myself to this. Much less do I do journalism, but every weekend I sit down to try to write an article. For me, for FG or for future projects I have in mind.
Two years ago, a good friend, Alejandro Bravo, was proposing to me to start a columnists project for this finance community. My colleague and friend Pablo González and I were brought together to close what we would be today. With its ups and downs, each moment has shaped what this is today and of which I am truly proud. The tireless effort of Pablo, to whom I will be eternally grateful, and the work of my team, made up only of great people, make this section something unique and incomparable. We have grown together like no one else has. Not only at the community level, but also personally.
So yes: I am writing and publishing on a platform. It was clear that, like me, there were more people who wanted to have a voice and try. It is difficult in a world like this, and the idea that here everyone who has the desire and commitment can contribute, regardless of your background or where you come from, is an idea I want to live by always. I am sure that he would have forgiven me for going against him, because I always did.
I will always say that this is his fault anyway. So much enthusiasm and dedication make my father an example to me. What can I do about it?
Allow me now to give you a summary of how it has all gone. I have been at one of the best universities in the world in my discipline, away from home; I have gotten into a cage with sharks in South Africa and I have skydived in California. Me, the boy who was afraid to leave the house or to go into the basketball basket and would shoot a three-pointer or a middy just in case it would hurt him. He wouldn't believe it.
It is not for me that I would want him to be proud. You would have to see Cecilia, my sister: how she has worked and overcome her problems and how happy I see her now. To Antonio, my grandfather: we still go to football with you present in the stands. We gather religiously by the flag, an hour before the match starts, with many more atleticos, in your name. Or what seems most important to me: my mother. Because I have never seen mum give up. And she had a thousand reasons. It is impossible not to push forward with someone like that at home. I want him to know that he can be at peace.
This is why I personally wanted to start the columnists section: because I wanted to help, contribute and be a little like my father.
Finally, thanks to those who read and support this. We are not professionals yet, but our enthusiasm and drive are fueled by the hope that things can go well.
It has cost me a lot. Thank you for reading it.
A goal hug,
Juan Colmenarejo Molina.
