"The most controversial and outspoken biohacker in football" This is how The Telegraph presented Marcos Llorente on one of the front pages ahead of the second leg between Arsenal and Atlético Madrid two weeks ago. On Tuesday, I got to meet him on El Hormiguero and I'll tell you that he must be doing something clearly right.
There are quite a few footballers who have businesses beyond their careers as professional athletes. There are few who, in addition to being footballers and entrepreneurs, are influencers. Whether he likes it or not, Marcos is having a clear influence on the social masses on the internet. Five minutes of conversation about the sun has sparked quite a stir on social networks.
Let's focus on the business, which is what we talk about here. Marcos' three known businesses are Naked & Sated, Rhudo and Aureo Lightstyle. The first two, gastronomic ventures, have not been successful.
At Wharton, in a Business Strategy class with Ronny Lee, I learned something that has stuck with me: companies are not usually killed by the assets they lack, but by the ones they have and don't know how to use.
Rhudo is a fine dining restaurant and bar. It went to creditors' auction last January with declared liabilities of three million euros. Along with Antoine Griezmann and Paco Roncero, it was confirmed that the real problem with many businesses and the reason for their failure is indigestion, not hunger. The restaurant had such valuable assets as the image of elite footballers and chefs or privileged capital to build on. They were unable to channel them and Rhudo died choking.
Naked & Sated was founded alongside a famous chef, Roberto Bosquet. It continues to operate, with declared losses of 0.8 million and two capital increases of 1.35 million in the last year. The healthy fast food concept hasn't quite worked out and didn't deliver the projected results.
Aureo did work: the yellow glasses at 199 euros sold out in a week. Yet Marcos broke with the brand seven days ago. Why? He gave the answer himself yesterday, without saying it: he presented FreeHuman, his own project. He no longer needs anyone. Health, the sun and the famous biohacking are a line of business that works only if he is present. And it is the value that his personal brand adds that makes this business practically irreplaceable and unique. He has managed to bring together the necessary characteristics for a business to succeed.
The conclusion, after running into him in a hallway and learning about his businesses, is this: Marcos Llorente has not learned how to set up companies. He has learned something rarer and more profitable: to be the asset himself. Personal branding is more on the rise than ever.
Simeone said recently: 'Less goalkeeper, he can play anywhere.' And look. He's on his way to proving it twice over. On the field and off it.
The moral is the same as always for those used to visiting the red and white stronghold every weekend. If you believe and work hard, you can. Marcos is yet another example.
I'm grateful to the El Hormiguero team for the opportunity to meet and be so close to role models and professionals.
